Leofric DeVaux was born in the rolling hills of Belvoir, the son of two wealthy marquis and heir to the legacy of Norman heroes. His early life was unremarkable, spent in the quiet comfort of privilege. However, at the age of thirteen, Leofric was chosen to serve as a clerical apprentice under Archbishop Guillaume de Montreuil. Under Guillaume’s guidance, he developed a deep faith and received education in spiritual and secular matters. This mentorship shaped Leofric into a man of both piety and ambition, and he dreamed of one-day committing deeds that would bring tremendous glory to himself and God.
When the call of the Crusades reached Albion, Leofric answered with zeal, leading a formidable army of knights and warhorses to foreign lands. He experienced repeated successes on the battlefield, victories so striking that they seemed divinely ordained, further strengthening his belief that he was chosen for a higher purpose. His triumphs brought glory, but amid the chaos of war, he felt a divine summons to return home.
Upon his return to his ancestral lands of Belvoir, Leofric found his realm burdened by the tyranny of King John Lackland. Unfair taxes crushed his people, while the king’s failures as sovereign left England weakened and Normandy under constant threat of French conquest. To Leofric, it was evident that John was not in God’s favor; his continuous defeats and dishonorable reign were stark proof of his unworthiness. Leofric felt a divine hatred for the king, believing him unfit to bear the crown or lead a Christian kingdom.
When Leofric learned that other barons across the kingdom were plotting a rebellion against King John, he leaped at the opportunity to join the cause. Conviction burned within him as he became one of the rebellion’s earliest and most fervent supporters, rallying his forces to the banner of resistance. Guided by the teachings of Guillaume and a sense of holy purpose, Leofric vowed to protect his domain and restore prosperity and security to Belvoir. Believing himself chosen by God, he set out to defend his legacy and fight for a kingdom that would align with divine justice.
