Godwin FitzGerald, Earl of Norfolk
History
-
Godwin FitzGerald spent much of his childhood in Ireland with his father, who assisted in the oversight of the recently invaded lands. This instilled in him a great interest in their culture; it is also where his family made strong connections with the soon-to-be King John, who gave his family an earldom in Norfolk when he ascended to the throne. When Godwin became Earl after the death of his father, he felt a strong sense of loyalty to King John, and sought to honor his king for the position his family was given. He does not understand why other barons would seek to overthrow their king, without whom they would not have achieved their position. He is also a devoutly religious man, and believes wholeheartedly in the divine right of kings. Even if King John was not favorable with the Church, did God make a mistake placing John on the throne? Can He not use an imperfect man to bring about a better England?
